I used the mirror USB for my Escort and it functions fine. Just need to turn it off before leaving the vehicle. The USB is hot even when the car is shutdown.

What puzzles me (5V to 12V inverters availability or not) is why Valentine et. el. haven't designed a new detector which uses a USB port? The truth is, the basic stuff inside isn't as new and innovative as radar detector makers would lead you to believe. It is sort of changing the look of the skin without changing the skeleton.

By the way, for those that don't know, Michael Valentine, the owner force to be at Valentine, passed away about a month ago.

Perhaps their units demand more current (amperage) than what the USB port provides? Anybody know which USB spec the port on the mirror supports?

Current draw isn't an issue. Older models detectors often drew about 350 mils, but half of that was regulator dissipation. The real issue with even late-model detectors is their non use of surface mounted devices. Yes, so do have them which is fine. The truth is, except for the antenna, you can build a radar detectors on a one inch square PC board, and have room left over. You could even reduce the size of the antenna (wave guide) by using a fractal antenna design. I don't know of any on the market at this time, however.

One thing which is possible these days, is building software to avoid detecting non-speed reading devices like automatic door openers (it is called interferometry analyzation). It would take a lot of programming, but with today's CPUs and cheap memory....?

My Uniden R8 doesn't have any issues with GDOs. In fact, it's one of the most flawless units I've ever owned.

I have the mirror tap in the DH (rain sensor). I just added the same in my '21 F150 -- that one goes ot the back side of the plug that pushes into the auto-dimming mirror (black = 12V+ and green = 12V -). Works great. Now I can use my Uniden R8 in either vehicle without that silly coil cord hanging down (in the truck).
