It started with a harsh clunking when putting in reverse or drive, delayed engagement. Then harsh shifting up and down, then some slipping, followed by searching for gears (off throttle), more slipping. The 2022 transmission failed completely as i was driving on the freeway, dumped a bunch of fluid and I'm sure there was at least a little fire going on. Wasn't on fire when I stopped. Could have happened tho.
I'm sure there are some blue oval techs on here that could shed some light on it. There's a youtube channel "Flying Wrenches" i think that has numerous videos on the 10R80
Crazy, never heard about it. Anything to prevent it?
No prevention I'm aware of. It's literally caused by a bushing in the CDF Drum assembly that moves a few mm's, and either blocks a fluid passage or opens a fluid passage that's not supposed to be open

The unfortunate thing with vehicles is that eventually something goes south lol. Regardless of make/model/year or how much you paid for the darn thing. Part of the reason I got an extended warranty from Ford when I bought it.

Every manufacturer has their issues. Pick your poison, I guess. Not having a V8 Mustang was not an option for me at that point. I'll see how this goes and decide if it's an option going forward. All three of mine were perfect except the transmission issues.

When I ordered my car 2 years ago, I did extensive research on the 10R80. What a horror story! At that time there was 3 class action lawsuits going. It is the hottest running trans out there, you have to use a special fluid for it. The root cause of the problem is that Ford didn't want to re-design the transmission tunnels. The 10 speed is only 1 inch longer than the 6 speed. Some people had Ford turn off the adaptive learning software and said the tranny work good after that. At the time I couldn't find anything saying Ford has made any improvements to it since it introduced in 16 or 17. Thank god the Tremec was available.

the 10R80 has been a mixed bag of reliability since its introduction in the 2017 F-150, though we're past the really bad early days. those "adaptive tables" seem to be a consistent cause of problems especially. they may be physically really strong, but the programming leaves a lot to be desired. my Mach 1 had a nasty lurch when doing a 3-2 downshift, but my Dark Horse has been issue-free for all 26.5k miles so far.

the whole thing reminds me of the silicon lottery. when buying CPUs and GPUs, you could get a real nice one that overclocks well (see the 9.12GHz ln2 14900KF), or one that just barely got binned into that product and cant overclock at all. except this is the transmission lottery. you can get one that behaves well, or one that will fight you until the bitter end

Wow, and here I am making 850 rwhp LOVING my 10R80, BEST transmission I’ve ever had in my life…

hope they get a solution for you, did you try a KAM reset?

I will say, I don’t ever do any hard driving until trans is up to 170* and I won’t make any pulls if it’s above 220*

I always keep my screens on temps and drive accordingly.

I just don't get it! Someone has a baby failure, or tells a story about his brother's sister-in-law's uncle's 10R80 failure, and suddenly the 10R80 becomes the brunt of misinformation!

The 10R80's failure rate isn't any worse than anyone else's modern (traditional) transmission. The same goes for the various 4, 5 and 6 speed (even 7 speed) manuals. What we don't know is how the transmission was treated? Abuse any part, and sooner of later it'll fail.

If you want to talk about failures, all anyone has to do is look at Nissan's non-traditional CVT! They've used slight variations of their CVT since the late 90s, and still haven't found the magic elixir to longevity. Driving any CVT-equipped Nissan model over 50K miles, and you're on borrowed time!

Well known problem in previous models and still Ford continues to use that Chinese transmission....
I had the same problem on my 2020 Bullitt!
I sold it and ordered a DH with the American Tremec transmission!
It would not accept shifts from 2nd to 3rd above 7000 rpm.
TREMEC is Transmisiones y Equipos Mecánicos SA de CV based in Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico.

Same. I had the 10 speed Automatic in my first S650. I decided to sell it last year and got me a 6 speed. Much much happier and I don't have to think about those potential issues.

I've had my DH for just about a year now and just the other day I pulled up to a stop sign and when I pulled away the RPM's went through the roof car jerked and engaged the gear. 1st time it did that but scared the crap out of me.

In the last 6 years, I've done a TON of them in F-150 and F-250, but never a Mustang yet. I was actually talking about it with the trans tech last week, he's never had one out of a Mustang.
I do know that the CDF drums that we are getting as replacements are different than the ones we are pulling out.

Is Mexico not North America?
When people from the United States talk about America, they don't mean the entire continent of South and North America combined and neither they mean Mexico or Canada.
