There have always been deals out there.

My car was a custom order, I paid $500 over invoice.

spoken like a true car salesman. LOL

that formula has worked for me three times in a row. it’s not bad - especially if you bring friends/family along for the ride and in that case it actually is fun - especially watching people try all their tactics at getting you to lose it’s a comedy show. And when you’re ready to walk away from a bad deal. They’ll keep you there all day trying to wear you down. be prepared for that. Fleet manger is ok so long as they’re not sympathetic to the sales guy. Some of that jive is too easy to see through.

Just don’t work the same general area too much cause some dealers like to watch each others backs. invoice is fair. If it’s much above that, it’s a rip. And never go for markup. That’s just wrong.
You gotta do what you gotta do. 😁

I was 13, went with my dad to buy my mom a new car, we were there for 9 hours, it was miserable. He was a big believer in the tactic of, "whoever talks first in negotiations, loses". Hour 8, he was making them take off the aluminum wheels and putting on steel wheels with hubcaps to save $400.00, the salesman was at his whits end, I was eating the last of their popcorn from their popcorn machine. He looks at at me and says, "Got 'em where I want them". I told him, "this is the worst day of my life, never again". šŸ˜‚

I feel sorry for your friends/family who get talked into going with you. I know their pain, hahahahaha

Wow. Maybe because I’m a former dealer but spending time at a car dealership isn’t my idea of fun. I can’t imagine doing it.

I always structure the deal over the phone then simply zip into the store for a quick pick up, 30-45 minutes tops including blowing off the obligatory extended warranty pitch. That’s what I did yesterday and it was very pleasant. Only time it goes sideways is if someone working there recognizes me from back in the day and wants to start up old home week.

Sorry champ but its not tactics, they dont care about you, don’t kid yourself. they make you believe they care and develop a friendship to control the deal. And you think they did you a big favor? I’m so very sorry but, my tactics are very straight forward. They have saved me a lot of money and time!
After 18 years and 14 new Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles purchased or leased from the same dealership from the same salesman (except the first two and the last one after he retired, which I then bought from his son), I can tell you with 100% certainty that building a relationship with a dealership has made a significant difference in every single interaction with that dealership. I've been on a first name basis with the owner for most of that time, and he's bent over backwards to get things done, get them done right, and get them done quickly. The only one fooling themself is the person who thinks they can just waltz into any dealership for a one-time purchase and get the same kind of service and support.

This sounds like zero fun dealing with 3 different dealers at once. Just ask for the fleet manager. They don't want you there any longer than you want to be there šŸ˜‚. Sell it at invoice, you get a good deal, they make a little and everyone leaves happy.
It's not only not fun, but it's ignorant.

Build a relationship and your future buying and servicing experiences will be outstanding.

Building that relationship to where you're talking about everything but the car you're about to buy is what's fun. Getting to know their wife, kids, family, etc...

Spent an hour on the phone yesterday with a long time customer talking about my daughter graduating highschool and his son finishing up his first year in college. Almost forgot to tell me to order the mustang convertible for his wife we've been working on for a month šŸ˜‚.

I've seen the same in my 45 years in the dealership. A customer dropped off a bunch of fresh produce to me yesterday.
We have a saying in Texas, "its best to dance with the one that brung ya!"

That's awesome. 45 years...if you don't mind me asking, how is it like working there and how has it changed since you started? (I've occasionally thought about working at a dealership, I'll admit.)

I have 28 years at Cadillac, 12 at Lexus and 5 at Ford. I am in service and still like it after all this time. I did go to college, but these were better paying jobs than anything else at the time. The hours are pretty long, and there is some abuse involved, but I have an inquisitive mind and it keeps my attention. I will admit that even having owned 8 Mustangs, that our quality and support from the factory leave a lot to be desired. I like my dealer group and am 6 years from retirement, so I'll stick it out.
Its not for everybody, that is for sure

...than anything else a 64 year old guy could do! But the $ sure isn't what it was. Adjusted for inflation, I'll never make as much as I did in 1987.

If you live in Canada in the Toronto Area you can order a GT for 7,000-8,000 off msrp through markville ford in markham.

If I had the opportunity I'd work specifically as a product specialist. Not sure if they have to work as salespeople first before being able to do that though.

At Ford, the salespeople do that. When I worked at Lexus, we had technology specialists who did it and helped with deliveries. I know other high line dealers are the same.
