So after having car for 1 year finally did oil change at a 1000 miles. Used the Motorcraft Synthetic. I’ve changed oil in many a car and truck over the years, this is a couple of hour endeavor. I used the 10 inch tall Race ramp cribs. They gave you plenty of of room under car, really good product. Panel removal easy but time consuming. I ended up up using a rubber funnel I got off Amazon to prevent the oil from dripping on frame components, it worked great!

I'm not a mechanic and never dod an oil change myself. I'm trying to read in and planning to start doing it myself. I've read that the car should be flat and not lifted only from de front or back.

Is there any reason besides that the oil can drain out better?

No reason to lift it flat when the oil drain is in the rear of the pan.

That's a really good question, if the drain was on the side of the pan I would say yes. The method I used is just as if on jack stands. It gives you a lot of room to move around and you need it with all of those machine bolts you have to remove. BTW it does hold 10 quarts.

Is it true, you really only ‘need’ to remove the under tray for easier access to the filter?

I guess you could get filter off without moving tray but you would have oil spilling everywhere. I would not suggest that method.

But not necessarily needed if only doing oil?

Couple of hours? It's 30 minutes, including cleanup. If I worked as slow as possible, and showed my kids how to do it along the say, 45 minutes.

I never did it before.
I think for me it would be 15 minutes to lift it up.
15 minutes to remove the cover
15 minutes to let the oil drain
5 minutes to refill
10 minutes to remove filter and replace filter in a way not to spill oil
20 minutes to put the cover back on.

I think it would take me 1.5 hours.

Older than the internet itself:

* Oil Change instructions for Men:*

1) Wait until Saturday, drive to auto parts store and buy a case of oil, filter, kitty litter, hand cleaner and a
scented tree, write a check for $50.00.
2) Stop by 7/11 and buy a case of beer, write a check for $20, drive home.
3) Open a beer and drink it.
4) Jack car up. Spend 30 minutes looking for jack stands.
5) Find jack stands under kid's pedal car.
6) In frustration, open another beer and drink it.
7) Place drain pan under engine.
8) Look for 9/16 box end wrench.
9) Give up and use crescent wrench.
10) Unscrew drain plug.
11) Drop drain plug in pan of hot oil: splash hot oil on you in process. Cuss.
12) Crawl out from under car to wipe hot oil off face and arms. Throw kitty litter on spilled oil.
13) Have another beer while watching oil drain.
14) Spend 30 minutes looking for oil filter wrench.
15) Give up; crawl under car and hammer a screwdriver through oil filter and twist off.
16) Crawl out from under car with dripping oil filter splashing oil everywhere from holes. Cleverly hide old oil filter among trash in trash can to avoid environmental penalties. Drink a beer.
17) Install new oil filter making sure to apply a thin coat of oil to gasket surface.
18) Dump first quart of fresh oil into engine.
19) Remember drain plug from step 11.
20) Hurry to find drain plug in drain pan.
21) Drink beer.
22) Discover that first quart of fresh oil is now on the floor. Throw kitty litter on oil spill.
23) Get drain plug back in with only a minor spill. Drink beer.
24) Crawl under car getting kitty litter into eyes. Wipe eyes with Oily rag used to clean drain plug.
Slip with stupid crescent wrench tightening drain plug and Bang knuckles on frame removing any excess skin between knuckles and frame.
25) Begin cussing fit.
26) Throw stupid crescent wrench.
27) Cuss for additional 5 minutes because wrench hit bowling trophy.
28) Beer.
29) Clean up hands and bandage as required to stop blood flow.
30) Beer.
31) Dump in five fresh quarts of oil.
32) Beer.
33) Lower car from jack stands.
34) Move car back to apply more kitty litter to fresh oil spilled During any missed steps.
35) Beer.
36) Test drive car.
37) Get pulled over: arrested for driving under the influence.
38) Car gets impounded.
39) Call loving wife, make bail.
40) 12 hours later, get car from impound yard.
Money spent:
Parts $50.00
DUI $2500.00
Impound fee $75.00
Bail $1500.00
Beer $20.00
Total -- $4,145.00
But you know the job was done right!

I guess if you are rush, lucky for me I’m not. I guess most of the time I spent was to prevent oil dripping all over frame and components. Sure I co do it quickly but that’s why I did not bring it to the dealership .

It's fine, you do you.

I just didn't want other newbies to think 90 minutes is expected and they should just bring it to the dealer or something. It takes me as long to change the Mustang's oil as it does to change the oil in a Honda CR-V.

All for doing it yourself, really it is not hard, for me not really worth it having to do away with old oil and clean up.

I am a recently retired automotive tech, in reality buying quality stuff and doing it myself vs local Ford dealer service, the cost savings is minimal.

I use Motorcraft synthetic oil and OEM filter.

Shame on the op for only hitting 1k miles in 12 months, get that thing on the road!
