Went to the dealer for an oil change and specifically asked for full synthetic 5W-30 since that’s what the service rep told me my car takes. Paid for it without issue, but when I reviewed the paperwork later, it says they used 5W-20 instead.

Now I’m wondering if 5W-20 is okay for my car or if I need to go back and demand they change it to the correct oil. Frustrated because I paid for the right oil, but they may have put something else in. Anyone know if 5W-20 could cause problems, or should I insist they fix it?

I think the S550 was 5w-20 but i can’t remember. Honestly it should be ok but i wouldn’t push it past 3k miles on the change with the meat these things make causing viscosity to fall faster. But if you want 5w-30 I’d call them and tell them to make it right and they should because the manual says 5w-30

Insist they fix it since they most likely used a synthetic blend for the 5w20 and there's a big price difference there. The oil itself should be okay.

Hey OP, 5W-20 is perfectly fine, I would not bother calling them. You will just waste your own time. lol

Both 5W-30 and 5W-20 are for the engine, the only difference between the oil is the 20 is ever so slightly thinner than 30.

If you look back in time, Ford has switched back and forth between 5W-30 and 5W-20 due to stupid CAFE regulations. Since 20 is ever so slightly thinner than 30, supposedly 20 gives better fuel efficiency through less friction. The early 00s cars took 30, then S197 took 20, then at some point gen 2 coyote (2015/2016) switched back to 30 for a short period but then for 2017 (literally same engine) and 2018+ gen 3 coyote went to 20... now they are back at 30 and I'm sure a few years from now they will change everything to back to 20... It is just B.S. 🙄 the cars take both, everything is perfectly fine.

If you are still reading this message, stop worrying about it and get back to partying for the holidays. 🎉🎅

As i said earlier the high heat in these engines I wouldn’t run 5w20 long. Oil analysis shows the viscosity has dropped below 30 at 5k changes on my vehicle. I’m running synthetic too. So while the S550 allowed it those ran cooler than these

the dealer messed up. it wont cause damage to run it until thursday as long as you dont go hard on it, the 2018-2020 gen 3s used 5W20. when they open, contact them and let them know their error. 100% chance they will admit fault and fix it. no dealer no matter how stubborn is going to say "get lost" to them using the wrong oil, and if they do, im sure Ford Motor Company will be all sorts of interested in that story

@StangMobile ..... #1. Get that $hit out of there right now and make the moron who used it replaces it for free - with what YOU specified ....5W30 FULL synthetic. End of discussion. The 5W30 can make a huge difference in your engine's performance and will likely prevent the dreaded BBQ tick from developing. In fact, more techs are recommending FULL synthetic unless you want your engine to sound like someone trying to start a BBQ. #2. Buy the oil from the parts department and give it to the tech so the dealer doesn't use bulk oil which might be Ford oil, might be 5W30 and might be FULL synthetic...... or not. I buy it and hand it to the tech at oil change time. The new 2024 GT Coyotes should NOT run on 5W20 and YES it does make a very big difference, particularly under load. #3. I tip my tech and he pre fills my oil filter - twice - once before he removes the belly pan, the old oil and old oil filter..... then he adds some more new oil to the new oil filter as the first pre-fill has been absorbed by the filter's filter media. Do this simple task properly and your engine will last a lot longer and you will likely not get the BBQ tick. #4 maybe you need a new dealer not populated with morons who have no idea of the properties of the appropriate oil for your engine of its intended performance parameters..

I’m definitely not going back to this dealer again, customer service was horrible as well.

IMO, not a big deal.

Not only have prior Coyote engines run on 5w-20, it is also noteworthy that 5w-30 shears down to a 20w fairly quickly. This is pretty well known with so many UOAs out there.

For my 1200 mile 2024 GT, the factory fill is already out of spec for a 5w-30. The viscosity (cSt 100C) is 9.1, a 30w needs to be in the range of 9.30-12.49. This was running it pretty easy for the first 1000 miles.

Just FYI, there has not been a single instance of oil being the cause or the solution to the BBQ tick. Actually to this date the tick remains a mystery.

Well if you’re not going back to the dealer who did the oil change how do you expect them to resolve the matter. Give you your money back? Good luck with that. They will claim the invoice was a typo.

You should be save with 5w20 during winter times(lower temps)but I would still have the dealer fix it.

Not going back after this issue is resolved, I’m not expecting them to do any extra favors as long as they change the oil with 5W-30. Will not be going to Ourisman Ford of Alexandria VA again.
