So I am about to buy the whipple stage 2 and was trying to get some help from some experienced people. I have the GT Premium, manual. I am familiar with mustangs and have drove them my whole life, but supercharging is a whole new game to me. I am trying to not spend $23,000 on this supercharger, but it seems without upgraded parts, 800+ hp might be too much for the stock car and things will end up breaking fairly quick.. I have a list I've been working on of things that I feel SHOULD be upgraded with the supercharger , but again - I'd rather save some money. Could someone walk me through if some of these parts can wait / what parts are absolutely necessary? Also let me know if I am forgetting anything. I'd prefer to just buy the whipple stage 2 and slap it on and drive, but I know thats not how it works. I'd also prefer not paying $5,000 for a whole new transmission but I know the stock trans is only rated about half of what I will be pushing soooo, little confused on how some people are just throwing whipples on and driving. Thanks for the help.

- The car is a daily driver that isn't driven crazy, but obviously I will be pushing it here and there for fun. MIGHT try the drag strip one day.

Heres the list I've built so far:

- Whipple Stage 2
- Tires
- Upgraded Clutch
- Stop the Hop kit
- Upgraded Trans
- Short shifter
- Upgraded Driveshaft
- Catch cans
- Upraded Axles

Tires, up to you, the traction control on Whippled cal is pretty damn good.. but say sure 555R2s

Clutch is a problem stock, the pressure plate doesn’t like high rpm disengagement.
Supercharged will magnify this.

I wouldn’t do the whole stop the hop, I just did cradle bushings and locators.

trans, wait until it breaks, plenty of blown MT82 cars are fine for a long life

shifter.. not needed but if you want it whatever

driveshaft I wouldn’t do unless you want more vibrations and shaking in the car

catch can 1 passengers side/dirty side
yes.

axles, only if you’re drag racing on sticky track prep with drag tires, I did gt350 axles $400.

I do not have direct experience with a supercharger build.

While not needing immediate attention, the build will have an impact on the cats. The increased stresses cause the internals to ultimately crack, breakdown and fail. Depending on the amount of power and how driven, they might last a good while or be lost sooner than expected.

Replacement options include new, Ford (GT500, Raptor-type) or aftermarket, to slightly used, to removing them all-together.

Like skye said, I’d get the cats RIGHT TF off the car.
I do not trust boost and cats long term.
Too many failures

great point skye!!

I have the stage 2 whipple with catless headers, oil pump gears (A Must) and catch cans. I can tell u if you plan to dig race the car u will break an axle at some point. I have stock clutch and a quick shift from 3 to 4 will burn the clutch. I tried it once and hit the rev limiter and had a bad odor but didn't feel tires spin so pretty sure the clutch slipped from the torque. That's my next move before axles and driveshaft because I don't need to dig race the car, I just want to have fun and maybe roll race here and there.

Sounds about right to me. But in order to not have vibrations I go with a two piece performance drive shaft. Carbon Fiber one piece DS are nice, safer, but when fail you'll have a mess to clean. They explode like light bulbs. I have performance axles with my Whipple stage one along with short shifter. I want a better clutch. My car is a daily city and freeway commuter. It's my pursuit and get away car if needed. Also wanting a two piece performance DS.

oil pump gears (A Must)
I've been debating this myself.

I've got a Stage 1 kit going on at the Ford Dealership at end of April. They never mentioned oil pump gears and it's a warranty product.

I've seen guys that get the Stage 2 kit automatically add that to their build list.

Is that the line in the sand? Stage 1 = no need and Stage 2 = automatically get this?

I suppose my next question is do I want to pay Ford to do this during install or have them do it down the road when I recover from the $14k hit for the kit and install?

I'd first get it in writing that they will still warranty the engine if you add oil pump gears.

None of the aftermarket companies that do blower installs change the gears, and they warranty the engine. It's been that way since the kits came out for the gen 1 cars.

I'd then point out that the gen 3/4 cars have improved oil pump gears and failures really aren't that common. Plus you're doing a stage 1 kit that doesn't make as much power or rev as high as say, a stage 2.

I've fread if the cars being torn down that far you may as well have the gears changed. Especially with a stage 2. I'm staying stage one. But now I wish I'd have known different colors could be ordered from Whipple. A Ford Performance in Waco did my Whipple. Should only cost you 10K. My install was $2500. For the Stage two, oil pump gears, performance one or two piece DS, and performance axle shafts, if going stage 2. Just for starts and peace of mind. Shift kit won't hurt since the car the cars drive train will be gone over.

Stage 2, no warranty. Stage 1 with a warranty costs more than Stage 1 without warranty.

I did some research and contacted whipple. Apparently if I remove the cats they will not tune it differently. I will still receive the basic tune with stock exhaust. My plan was to remove them before tuning, but with the tune set up to the basic exhaust system, will I face any issues not having them on? I would also consider going an upgraded route instead but I looked everywhere and cannot tell/decide what would be a good option for preventing the internals being worn. Could you help me with further links or advice I'd really appreciate it!

Also, I've already pulled the trigger and decided to buy:
- Whipple Stage 2
- Mcleod RXT HD Clutch
- Ultimate Stop the hop kit
- Open air box kit
- Short shifter
- Whipple supercharged catch can
- Upgraded oil pump gear - ported
- gt500 Half shafts

And decided to buy tires only if needed after all of this is installed. I appreciate all the recommendations from everyone else thank you!

Sounds about right to me. If you don't want vibrations Ford Performance makes a 2 piece driveshaft. Other companies do, but I'll stick with Ford Performance. The half shafts are a must for stage 2. I have stage one, but will use performance half shafts for piece of mind.

I have the stage 2 whipple on my 24 GT and kooks catless headers. There is no issue with it and it's the best route to take. After time unless u get the Green High Output (H.O.) cats u will have an issue clogging them and blowing the motor. My performance shop wouldn't install the whipple unless I went with the Kooks H.O. cats or no cats at all. Let me tell u in advance with no cats and a steeda H pipe with factory active cat back exhaust is loud AF even on quiet mode cold start and smells pretty bad 😅. U will not have quiet starts with the headers and no cats. Down the line I may add them back in but the catless headers are 2k less. Hope this helps
