@roadpilot is correct. There is a process to follow here and if you don’t do it correctly, all they do is connect, check for DTC’s, report the car/truck/whatever is “current”.
Have your information available, if you have printout on letterhead, use it. Tell the S/A “My mustang is doing <insert problem here> and I found this TSB/service memo/rumor and I would like this issue addressed and the modules fully updated. Be specific, “don’t just plug in and check the car if the modules are compatible, update them to the most current version available."
back in 2017 I got an early MY Raptor. My truck came with over 100 miles on it and was held back by Ford for additional QA. They made 4 pages worth of fixes, changes, updates. The dealer, a small family owned joint called me when they got the truck - sales manager
‘hey, i have some kinda bad news, the truck has like over a hundred miles on the clock. it looks like Ford kept it for qa or something, We didn’t do it, I’m keeping the paperwork to show you we haven’t been abusing your truck’ - I was like ‘still new right? still got the warranty, still in new condition, then we’re good.’ I have the list in an old post on FRF.
Anyway, even with the 2 or 3 revised programming updates they performed, the 10r80 programming was... less than optimal. It wasn’t harsh, clunky, etc., it was ‘lazy’. Normal drive mode will send you to 10th gear at 41-42mph and STAY there and it wouldn’t downshift at all, unless you floored it and even then, at over 50mph it still wouldn’t downshift out of 10th. Instead, it would just dump 20psi of boost and hope for the best.
I mentioned it at next service, which was only a week or 2 out. ticket said checked TCM, all modules current. same problem. I brought it back, this time I mentioned a TSB known in the Raptor community but apparently I did not use the magic words. I got the same thing.
3rd trip: this time S/A calls me, I was pretty insistent when I dropped it off. We reached an understanding that the TSB mentions harsh shifting DO YOU HAVE THAT problem? “Why yes Josh, now that you mention it, I do”.
It worked, they performed the update and it did shift 100% better. It would even downshift out of 10th going uphill under moderate load. Yes, this is kind of what you expect any modern or antique vehicle to do...
So, the moral of the story, know the magic words to use when you want the modules updated.
