Jesus, the weight increase. They didn't even try. We give Ford a hard time for a mustang GT weighing 3,800-3,900 lbs, but this thing is almost a thousand lbs heavier.

Keep in mind, the main benefit of EVs is straight line acceleration. This thing at lower speeds isn't that much faster than a 10 speed 5.0 and it's gonna get it's ass handed to it by the mustang in the corners. Dodge is cooked bro, this is it, game over. Nothing they make is selling anymore, that will be compounded by this trend.

Edit: I said almost a thousand lbs heavier, I meant two thousand lbs please forgive me. I wrote that after having gone through 2 all nighters in 3 days, a funeral service, and 4 flights in 3 days as well. So I was mentally and physically drained when I wrote that.
5,838 lbs. seems a little ridiculous.
You know the Government will add an Extremely High ROAD TAX because of the Weight doing major damage to the Highways!
I have a 2020 F-150 4x4 Rapid Red Limited, 450 horse and 510 lbs. torque.
I don’t believe my Truck weighs 5,838 full of 36 gallons of gas and the Denver Broncos Offensive Line sitting in the back.
The Battery in the Charger must weigh more than a TON?
I’m glad Dodge went this Crazy. Ford will sell more Mustangs.

Just think about the Cost of replacing a 2,000 lb. Battery every few years?
Several months ago a EV burned up on I-25.
The only thing let was a Pile of debris.
The Vehicle was unrecognizable!
I wouldn’t have one shoved up my A-S!!

I see this vehicle as a solution in search of a problem. Buyers of it will occupy a small portion of the market.

Will middle-aged performance enthusiasts want one? By and large, no. They're looking for something that ties back to their youth. Something mechanical.

Will younger up-and-comers want one? No. Most see a vehicle of any kind as a utilitarian device. They're always looking at their phone. They hate driving. They want to entertained. Not from driving. From watching influencers.

In the US, people continue to buy trucks and SUVs. Initial enthusiasm for EVs has waned. While promising and capable to some now, for many, they're just not there yet. Not as much a cutting-edge product today. More bleeding edge.

So who would buy this car? Former and current dissatisfied Tesla S owners wanting something else.

Initially, Tesla was a do-no-wrong company. Early adopters overlooked style, quality and price. But now, Tesla is just another vehicle manufacturer. Tesla's quality is often poor. As a lay person, I couldn't readily identify the differences between models; they do generally all look the same.

Trolling through several message boards yesterday, many Tesla S owners are die-hards: they overlook a lot to have one of the fastest EVs available. But many more others were tired of the years-old, unchanging style and didn't see the point of paying so much more for a car when a Model 3 could be had.

Will the Dodge EVs sell? Yes. In large numbers? Difficult to see that. Look to Tesla S sales; this is what Dodge could hope for. An additional, recent influence affecting enthusiasm: the huge amounts of depreciation seen between new and like-new EV models, often larger than ICE units. Buyers might hesitate and want to purchase something with a few miles on it versus brand new.

Regarding the weight, the Dodge models are arriving about 1,000 lb / 453 kg heavier than the Model S or Taycan. So, a starter, entry-type performance EV? Possibly.

One feature of the Dodge line I had a laugh at: the Driver Experience recorder. An app and function of the car which records everything, including footage via the on-board cameras (see drag, track, sport and donut mode). Scene at the dealership opens...

"What's that ya say? You're having a problem with your EV Charger? OK. We'll take it in the back and begin having a look."

They get the vehicle in the service area and immediately begin searching for any recorder information. Like any computer, while the user deleted something, in most instances, it's not really gone, is it? Within moments the tech is writing, "refuse warranty service, refuse warranty service, refuse warranty service..." :giggle:

I weight my 2017 Raptor super crew at the dump once with 1 human passenger + driver. I had some token stuff in the bed - maybe 100 - 200 pounds tops -but bulky. scale said 5875. I don’t recall how much fuel, probably half tank or over.

I genuinely don't see how Dodge recovers from this. They're not gonna go back to v8s, they can't. They don't make enough EVs and hybrids to offset the carbon emissions from a V8. As much as some may dislike the Mach-e, Ford has been very clear that selling it, along with other EVs, is the reason they're still able to make a V8 mustang.

But with this charger, your options are a lot of an EV, of a 6 cyl that by most accounts, is extremely unreliable in other models, and that's in detuned applications. I don't see that 6 cyl getting more reliable with higher boost.

People often overreact to change, but I genuinely believe Dodge just killed their brand. They don't sell trucks anymore, they make one large suv that no-one really wants because it's so outdated with no replacement in sight, they don't do sensible affordable cars, and now, they've pissed off the one demographic they have left. I just genuinely don't see how they survive the next 10 years.

Just watching the mopar YouTubers you realize how many issues they have going on, and how a good amount of the fanbase is out of touch as well.

When the brand started being at its worst all of a sudden they would bring up how the 5.0 and LS/LT motors were changed over time to compensate for regulation changes or how it was dumb that RAM branched off. Things of that nature. Everything is noticed too late, even within that company.

I don’t really see people outside of that sphere surprised they’re in a free fall, it’s just how fast it’s happening within the last couple years that shocks me.

Yeah, that's a big beast. The thing is, I can't figure out why it weighs that much. A Tesla model S weighs 4,800 or so (4,776 according to google) and has more range (406 vs 260). It's a Lithium Ion Nickel Cobalt Aluminum (NCA) battery vs the Nickel Manganese Cobalt battery (NMC) in Tesla. Both are rated right around 100 kWh and 400V.

So, Why does the charger weigh 1000 lbs more than the Tesla?

Bigger. 121 in wheelbase and 206 inch length vs Model S at 116" and 198" length It's also 2 inches wider and 3 inches taller than the tesla

Hybrid design: I don't mean drivetrain here, but the chassis is designed both for EV and ICE powertrains. This type of system could result in needing additional chassis mass so that it can support both

Battery tech. This is a head scratcher. Dodge using NCA would normally indicate a weight savings for a similarly sized battery. NCA (dodge) should have 200-260 Wh/kg while NMC (Tesla) is 150-220. Wh/kg.

Motor weight. No idea on this. Each Tesla motor is indicated to have a total weight of 210 lbs. I have no idea if this includes the inverter or not, or just the motor and other necessary parts.

Material choice. How much weight saving material went into the Dodge vs a Tesla?

Aerodynamic efficiency (more of a range issue than a weight issue, but related some of the big problems with the car). When you look at building a Tesla or a Lucid, pay attention to the difference in range when selecting wheel styles. I've seen some wheel styles that can drop 30-40 miles from the estimated range vs the most efficient (and ugliest IMO) ones. Looking at Dodge, they didn't even try to get something aerodynamic for their wheels (current gen aluminum wheels.) The Tesla is also very aerodynamic in shape. The Charger...less so.

I'm old school green. Like use less shit. EVs and the inputs necessary for them are an ecological nightmare. Look up where cobalt and lithium come from. Think about what happens during a major accident with an EV where the battery leaks. It'll turn into a new superfund site.

I'm all for being green, but not in a blind, stupid, no sense, brain dead way. Smh.

Stellantis has been on its way out for a while.

In related news, the ICE I6 "Sixpack" version is being fast tracked for summer's end 2025. The EV is estimated to have a curbweight of 5800lbs; the Sixpack is estimated to be around 4200lbs.

After thinking about it, I think the big reason for the Charger range is either aerodynamic efficiency (wheels, shape, and of course weight), bad motor design (too heavy a motor), or some combination of the two That car weight they reported is just too heavy for that size a battery unless they screwed something up in the design. Maybe a single energy source vehicle can use the battery compartment as part of the frame and without it, they needed to beef it up and now they have belt and suspenders...

  • For its most premium options, the Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck, coverage is 8 years or 150,000 miles.

Let's say the engine weighs 600lb and the trans is 150lb. Add a couple hundred lbs for exhaust, rear end...

Figure a couple electric motors are 300lbs, add a 1500lb battery....it all makes sense

Your mustang weaves more than your Bronco?
I believe it weighs a lot more than my 2020 F150 4 x 4 Limited with a 450 horse H O 3.5 turbo charged.
i’m wondering if some States may charge an extra road tax because they’re so heavy?
I believe the EV’s in Colorado pay a lot more for license plates than a ICE because of the weight.
They way more than some trucks and can damage the road with their weight?

The Dodge has a universal platform, rather than one dedicated to electric power, so they can use the six cylinder engine. Weight savings with more aluminum, integrating the battery into the frame, and using compact components (vs. having bulky motors and a two speed transmission) could have been implemented, but were not. The Lucid Air Touring weighs in at 5000lbs with a 92kW battery (with a motor/integrated 1 speed gear weighing 163lbs.; the front motor is just 70.5lbs.) yielding 377 miles of range on 20" wheels, and it has a 0-60 of 3.4s at 620hp; but that car has some very neat engineering.
